Europese Moeflon

European Mouflon

The European Mouflon is a hardy wild sheep, believed to be one of the ancestors of modern domestic sheep breeds. Native to the mountainous islands of Corsica and Sardinia, it has since been widely introduced across Europe and, more recently, onto South African game ranches as a prized exotic trophy.

Rams carry large, tightly curled horns that can spiral through more than a full turn, while ewes are usually hornless or carry only small horns. The coat is a rich reddish-brown, with mature rams developing a pale saddle patch across the back that fades to a cream underside and rump. Sure-footed and wary, mouflon favour rocky, broken terrain, where their agility and keen eyesight give them the advantage over predators and hunters alike.
