African Civet

The African Civet is a large, nocturnal carnivore found in forests and savannas across sub-Saharan Africa. Its coarse coat is marked with bold black blotches and stripes over a greyish base, with a distinctive black facial mask and erectile dorsal crest raised when threatened.

Solitary and secretive, the civet is best known for the musk it produces, historically prized in perfumery. It is an omnivore, feeding on fruit, insects, small vertebrates and carrion.
