Ratel
Honey Badger
(Mellivora capensis – Schreber, 1776)
The Honey Badger, or Ratel, is renowned throughout Africa for its fearless temperament and thick, loose skin, which lets it twist and turn to bite back even when seized by an attacker. Despite its small size, it will readily confront animals many times its size, and is famed for its resistance to snake venom.
Its coat is distinctively two-toned, black below with a broad grey-white mantle running from crown to tail, and it is a highly adaptable omnivore found across savanna, grassland, and desert habitats.
Average shoulder height is 25 cm (10") and average weight is 9–16 kg (20–35 lb).
