Spotted Hyena
(Crocuta crocuta – Erxleben, 1777)
A large and powerful carnivore found in savannas, grasslands, and woodlands across sub-Saharan Africa. The colour of its coat is sandy-yellow to grey, marked with distinctive black or dark brown spots. It has a robust build, a sloping back, and strong jaws capable of crushing bones. Spotted hyenas are highly social and live in matriarchal clans that can consist of up to 16-40 animals. Their vocalizations include the famous “laugh”, as well as whoops, grunts, and growls used for communication.
Average shoulder height is 80 cm (31”), and the average weight is 50-86 kg (110-190 lb).
