Common Eland
(Taurotragus oryx – Pallas, 1766)
The largest of all African antelope, the Common Eland is a massive, ox-like plains dweller with spiralled horns carried by both sexes and a distinctive dewlap.
Despite its bulk it is a capable jumper, and herds range widely across savanna and semi-desert in search of grazing.
Average shoulder height is 160 cm (63") and average weight is 500–700 kg (1100–1543 lbs).
