(Raphicerus melanotis – Thunberg, 1811)

A small antelope found in the fynbos and scrublands of South Africa near rivers and also coastal forests. The colour of its coat is dark reddish-brown, speckled with white, giving it a grizzled appearance. It has a slender build with large ears and only males have short, straight horns. Its behavior is highly secretive, and it is primarily nocturnal. When alarmed, it emits a snorting sound before darting into cover.

Average shoulder height is 54 cm (21"), and the average weight is 10 kg (22 lb).
